What Size Tapestry do I order?
Choosing the correct size of tapestry can be easy if due consideration is given
to the size of the wall and the furniture and accessories that surround that
wall where the tapestry will hang.
Follow the following steps:
1. Measure the wall in inches where you would like to display the tapestry.
Ensure and consider furniture placement as mostly a couch, cabinet or bed would
be placed directly below the tapestry.
2. If you have a crown molding ie decorative woodwork placed at the top wall
near the ceiling- measure just below the wood molding.
3. If you are going to use a rod with decorative finials, be sure to add the
size of the finial will add to both sides of the tapestry. The finials would add
between 2 to 6 inches or more depending on the finials that you select for your
tapestry. So when looking at your space, add the amount of inches each finial
will extend to the width of the tapestry. This will give you a better idea of
how much of the width of the wall your tapestry will need. If you use any of the
other popular methods such as baseboard method or saw-tooth hanger method to
hang your tapestry there will no additional width for your hanging method.
Once you have established the size of space you have to work with, you can take
a piece of fabric such as a sheet or large sheets of paper, pin it to the size
you think you tapestry should be. Then hold it up in your space to see if would
like something that size on your wall. Readjust the size of your template to try
different sizes to see if you would be able to go with a larger or smaller
tapestry. We strongly recommend pinning the size to be the same as the tapestry
you are considering. Remember to add the allowance for finials if you are using
a decorative rod. Generally this gives a much better idea of the size of
tapestry you need. Now you will have a better visual of the tapestry size than a
mental image.
It’s very important to bear in mind that tapestries are a woven piece of art.
Often the measurements listed could vary by manufacturer and or tapestry due to
the weaving in different lots by the manufacturer. Industry standard allow for a
variance of 3-5% depending on the size. Your tapestry can be slightly larger or
smaller. We always recommend allowing for a slight size variance in your
measurement.
The above is not necessarily an all inclusive solution to selecting the
appropriate size tapestry for your wall. However, it would give you some food
for though before embarking on your tapestry purchase at

Hanging a tapestry on a curved wall:
Below are some useful suggestions on how to hang tapestries on a curved wall.
A. You could visit a specialized drapery store and they could custom make a rod
to fit the curved wall.
B Alternatively a white carpentry trim is an excellent material that is light
weight, flexible and easy to work with. The carpentry trim is available at your
local hardware store for around $3- 4. The trim needs to be wide to accommodate
your tapestry. Cut the carpentry trim 1” shorter than the size of the tapestry
or if you wish a smidge shorter than your tapestry.
Next, drill four holes in your trim equidistance apart. If you have a 30 inch
piece of trim, your holes would be at the 0 inch mark, 10 inch mark, 20 inch
mark, and 30 inch mark.
Now establish the height at which you will be placing the tapestry and place the
board at that spot for your tapestry. It’s important to centre and level your
board. . Securely hold the board in place and with the help of a pencil mark the
wall through the holes drilled earlier in the board. Next you will drill a hole
at the 4 places marked on the wall. Next insert your dry wall anchors into the
holes.
Next buy a double sided Velcro at your local hard ware store or at your local fabric
store. Ask for the strongest Velcro available. You should be able to purchase it
in a 3 inch width. The Velcro you purchase should be the same size as your white
carpentry trim. We used Velcro with adhesive. Next, stick the hooks side of the
Velcro to your white carpentry trim. Be sure to cut holes in the Velcro where
the holes are in your board. (Sticking the Velcro to the smooth side of the
white carpentry board gives it a much better surface to adhere to than sticking
it to a painted wall.) The white carpentry trim is now ready to screw into the
wall. Be sure to install it with the Velcro facing you. Take the loop side of
the Velcro and adhere it to the tapestry back and top. You will also want to
attach the Velcro by sewing it on to the tapestry. If you have a heavy duty
sewing machine, select a thread color that will blend into your tapestry. If you
do not have a heavy duty sewing machine, take your item to a reputable
seamstress to have the Velcro sewn on.
After the white carpentry board with Velcro is installed and the Velcro is
securely attached to the top of your tapestry, you are ready to hang the
tapestry on your curved wall. Simply press the tapestry to the white carpentry
board.
If you need a ladder that is very tall for your installation, you can usually
rent one from your local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowes.
If you ever need to take the tapestry down, try taking off the tapestry along
with the rod. After you have placed it on a table pull off the tapestry rod
gently away from the tapestry.
You may need to amend these instructions for your installation depending on your
situation. This is simply a guide to help you. Often, our customers improve upon
our ideas. We would love to hear from you. Tapestry catalogue will not accept
any claim for damages for following our instructions/suggestions. Please check
with your local hardware dealer/drapery specialist for your specific
instructions.
Removing Wrinkles from a Tapestry
Perhaps you have just purchased a new tapestry wall hanging or have come across
an heirloom in grandmother's attic. You would love to hang your new find but it
is extremely wrinkled. Here are some suggestions to help you remove the
wrinkles.
Antique Heirloom Tapestries - You may wish to take the heirloom tapestry you
found in grandmother's attic to a reputable dry cleaner or an antique dealer. We
recommend a dry cleaner that is well versed in professional drapery cleaning.
You should ask for the manager and point out how special your new find is and
ask them if they are able to clean your item. You may also want to contact an
antique dealer in your area for specific advice on dealing with older fabric.
There may need to be section's of your tapestry that need repair and an antique
dealer may know a source in your local area having this work done. The antique
dealer may also be able to recommend as to whether or not you should have the
item dry cleaned. It is always best to approach someone in your area who can see
the item first hand and give you professional advice on caring for it or
restoring it.
New Tapestries - A new tapestry will probably have creases or wrinkles and may
need ironing before you hang it. To remove creases, we recommend ironing the
back of the tapestry first, with a steam iron on a medium setting. This will
remove most of the creases. If you need to iron the face or front, we recommend
you place a thin towel or pressing cloth between the fabric and the iron to
avoid scorching the fibers. Use common sense. A drapery steamer may be used to
remove any creases as well. We do not recommend using these methods for an
antique or heirloom item. The fibers may be very and need special care.
If you have purchased a new tapestry and have mounted it on a wall, it should
require very little maintenance. Vacuum the front back of your tapestry once or
twice per year with your vacuum cleaner's upholstery attachment to remove dust.
When your new tapestry requires deep cleaning, please take it to a professional
dry cleaner, one that is well versed in professional drapery cleaning. You may
take your new tapestry to your dry cleaner to remove wrinkles as well.
Tapestry panels- Unfinished panels
To remove the creases:
Lay the tapestry on an ironing board or anything soft with a stiff backing with
its back facing up. Place a soft cloth (muslin cloth or similar) 3. Carefully
and gently iron the crease. Steam ironing is not recommended, however for very
stubborn creases you use a steam iron.
Unlike a framed print, your new tapestries may not be perfectly square. The
beauty of our tapestries is that they are individually woven on a loom and like
any custom work may have some natural irregularities to retain the beauty and
elegance of your tapestry. To help the tapestry hang better, we recommend using
a steam iron to lightly iron your tapestries and flatten the ends on receipt
Please use common sense when dealing with your tapestry. Wrinkle removal is
fairly simple, especially when dealing with a new tapestry. Since most
tapestries are wall mounted they receive very little wear and can last for
years.
Four Methods for Hanging a Tapestry
There are many methods you may use to hang a tapestry. It is just personal
preference as to which method you choose and what your space allows.
1. Hanging Rods - Rods with finials and brackets look lovely with a tapestry.
They also usually come with installation instructions. Rods usually hang a
tapestry 1.5 to 2.5 inches away from the wall. The distance from the wall is
determined by the bracket and/or finial size. There are a few rods that do hang
a tapestry closer to wall. They usually have a very small finial and are hung on
a J shaped bracket. Also, when selecting your rod, be sure to consider how far
the finial with extend on each side of the tapestry. A 4 inch long finial will
add 8 inches to the width needed for your hanging area. For example, you are
hanging a 50 inch wide tapestry and select a finial that extends 4 inches on
each side of the tapestry. You will need to allow for 58 inches of space for
your tapestry.
2. Saw Tooth Hangers - You may sew 3 to 4 saw tooth hangers to the lining of
the top of the tapestry. These should be available at a local hardware or
framing store in the picture hanging area. You would then hang the tapestry like
a picture using the hangers and a few nails. For a very heavy tapestry, we
recommend doubling the saw tooth hangers for added support. This method hangs
the tapestry very closely to the wall. You do not use a hanging rod or brackets
when using this method.
3. Baseboard Method - This is done by simply using a piece of baseboard a
little shorter than the width of the tapestry. The width of the baseboard can
vary with the width of the pocket on the tapestry. Once you have the baseboard
cut to length, drill a hole at each end that is equidistant and centered.
Determine where you will be hanging the tapestry, then, using a level and
pencil, mark through the drilled holes where the screws will be placed. Now that
the screw holes are determined you will probably want to put wall anchors where
the screws will be going. Then, put the baseboard into the pocket and secure one
end of the baseboard at a time using screws the right size for the wall anchor.
As you can tell, this puts the tapestry right next to the wall, the top being
very straight and level.
4. Wooden Dowel: A quick and easy way is to cut a length of round wooden
dowel slightly longer than the rod pocket. Insert small cup-hooks into each end
and simply place them over small picture hook nails or any other fastening
system. This is quick, easy and cheap. However, with the cost of rods being so
reasonable we would recommend that you buy a tapestry rod.
These are only a few of the possible ways to hang a tapestry. Feel free to use
your imagination to find the way that best suites your needs. Come visit us at

damages for following our instructions/suggestions and or recommendations.
